Sit-in in Nablus in protest at medical negligence in Israeli jails

Gaza12Oct4NABLUS (PNIC):-The National Committee for the Support of Prisoners in Nablus city staged on Wednesday a solidarity sit-in against the Israeli policy of medical negligence pursued against Palestinian prisoners.

The event, which was held at al-Shuhada Square in the city center, was attended by a considerable number of prisoners' families, school students and representatives of some institutions and organizations in the city. Photos of sick detainees were raised and slogans demanding their release and putting an end to the policy of medical negligence were chanted.

Head of the Committee Emad Eshteiwi asked, during his speech in the event, the international human rights organizations especially the International Committee of the Red Cross and the World Health Organization to intervene and save the lives of Palestinian sick prisoners in Israeli jails.

He highlighted different forms of violations practiced against prisoners in general and the sick captives in particular. The most dangerous include procrastination in offering treatment and health services, refusing to conduct necessary surgeries and operations as well as blackmailing the sick or wounded detainees in return for offering treatment.

Clinics in Israeli jails lack specialized physicians and have no doctors working at night time, he said. Sick prisoners receive pain killers only regardless of the nature of their sickness and they are even given expired medications sometimes, Eshteiwi added.

He pointed to the unhealthy detention conditions prisoners are suffering from where they have to live in too crowded rooms with high degrees of humidity and no ventilation.
